In early December, we started a decluttering project. Half inspired by reading Goodbye, Things and half by the desire to get our life back in order after the chaos of 2020, we spent several afternoons combing through closets, cabinets, and drawers. More than 250 items left our home, not including any papers that we decluttered from our file box. Some items were donated to the thrift store, some were given to family members (who actually wanted them), some were recycled, and a lot (unfortunately) had to go in the trash. Below are the ones that were rehomed to friends, family, and Goodwill.
We also went all Marie Kondo on our bedroom closet, rolling all of our t-shirts, shorts, and pajamas to fit in a neat little row of storage bins. Here’s the before and after:
Before KonMari After KonMari
I still have our patio storage closet to work on, and I have plans to go through my old photos this winter and scan a lot of them to cloud storage. Eventually, I’d like to get rid of our file box altogether, but that will also require a day of scanning. Decluttering is always a work in progress, but it’s so worth it!
Did you do any end-of-year decluttering?
What an inspiring post! You’ve encouraged me to have a good new year clear out and de-clutter 🙂

This is a very inspiring post and a great tip for a new book to read. This year we’re going to take a serious look at getting rid of some of the stuff just taking up space. Happy New Year. 👍🏼❤️🙏🏼

I spent a lot of timing decluttering my clothes last week and got rid of 7 big trash bags full. I still don’t know how I had that many clothes!

That’s awesome!! I know what you mean – we found clothes we didn’t know we had and then, after all the decluttering, would you believe that one of my clients sent me a t-shirt for Christmas! I think that’s how clothes creep in on us 🙂
